THE MODERN UTOPIAN

                "The Other Half"

The 1st and Highest Priority of The Modern Utopian is the end of wars and violence worldwide.

"To remain neutral in situations of injustice, is to be complicit in that injustice" - Desmond Tutu, on Brave New Foundations "Rethink Afganistan" loghead.

People only seem to care about their own pocket books.
Human lives are so much more important.
Instead of spending a million dollars for each soldier we put in harm's way, we need to bring them home, give them benefits for their service, and give them (and others) jobs by spending our tax dollars to improve our economy/country.
Tell everyone - bring the troops home and spend the tax money on peaceful jobs, not war.

END WARS NOW

    FIRST STEPS:

    1)  Begin negotiations with Russia and all other countries with nuclear weapons to eliminate them. (Iran has already made this proposal!) This  can be done on a gradual, although definite timeline. Reduce numbers, reduce or eliminate all locations outside one's own country where these weapons exist, eliminate "active" warheads on submarines, etc.

    2) Drastically reduce and eliminate American bases in foreign countries.  Begin by eliminating those created during the Cold War and either minimize or eliminate those in counrties like German and Japan, countries capable of paying for and caring for their own needs.

    3)  Close the School of the America - where training of Latin American "soldiers" has not been and definitely is no longer necessary.

    4)  Cut the military/Pentagon budget by, first, getting a detailed report of what funds will be used for and then eliminate all weapons no longer needed such as as those used in ground troop deployment (tanks, for example); eliminate funds for additional planes, submarines, and warships where current numbers are already adequate or in excess.

    5)  GO TO THE VERY BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE FOR ADDTIONAL STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN - PIECEMEAL, IF NECESSARY, TO EVIDENTUALLY REACH THE GOAL: NO MORE WAR.

There is only one thing we should be talking about:  Ending the American Empire around the world and our ADDICTION TO WAR> once we stop wasting billions on the war machinery and instead create work at home with those billions and billions, we will put our nation on the correct course and help make the world a better and safer place as well. Sorry, George Bush, "They don't hate us for our freedom". They hate us because we are instrumental in taking away theirs!

CUT THE MILITARY/PENTAGON BUDGETS by no less than 50% - that means eliminate most of our troops in foreign countries -  and stop all weapons development.

SECRETARY OF DEFENSE PANETTA ON WAR SPENDING
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is flagrantly advocating for war
profiteers at the expense of real security for the American people.   He's
trying to browbeat Congress and other officials into continuing to send huge sums  of our money to war profiteers who are killing jobs and ripping off the taxpayer.  Our new video busts Panetta's scare tactics and talking points.  See his defense of the military budget on video.         Here is the evidence of what Eisenhower warned us about, and we have ignored to our huge detriment.  Time to drastically cut the military budget and use the funds to give unemployed soldiers (and other Americans) good jobs at home.
People only seem to care about their own pocket books.
Human lives are so much more important.
Instead of spending a million dollars for each soldier we put in harm's way, we need to bring them home, give them benefits for their service, and give them (and others) jobs by spending our tax dollars to improve our economy/country.
Tell everyone - bring the troops home from these terrible ventures and spend the tax money on peaceful work, not war.
In 2001 the Pentagon agreed to buy 2,886  F-35s for $226.5 billion dollars or $79 billion per airplane.
The per copy cost is now $116 million and increasing..."  because of cost overruns, production delays and technical problems.... they just added "an additional $4.6 billion dollars for flight testing and evaluation of the F-35."
Get it!  Billions of dollars for 2,886 airplanes that they don't even know will work well?  Are we not secure enough today without the F-35?
This is just one example of the incredible waste of tax payers dollars with the excuse that it is for our defense.
The Congress (and the Administration) simply allow the defense budget to increase every year without questioning how the money is spent. (Some Congressmen love money being spent in their districts, of course.)
Did you realize that the grand total of military spending in 2009 was 948.7 billion dollars?   Combine the military budgets of the top 14 countries in the world and you will not even come close to this number. 43% of the ENTIRE world's military spending is American. Since 1997 our military budget has tripled!

THE DEFICIT = WAR
"If the US would just cut its military spending down to size, instead of spending as much as the rest of the world combined on war or preparing for war--say by 75%--it would free up more than $450 billion a year that could go towards funding things like improved education, research into alternative energy, improving health care access, and paying down the deficit, too. Toss in cuts in the outsized $40+ billion annual secret intelligence budget, in the nation’s obsolete and dangerous nuclear weapons program and other ancillary military-related expenditures, and we’re talking about saving half a trillion dollars a year."
     - from David Lindorff's article on "It's the War, Stupid"

Isn't it time to review line-by-line every expense to see what is no longer necessary?
Tell everyone you know to write your Congressmen (and women) to ask for a DETAILED MILITARY BUDGET EXPENSE REVIEW.

In considering an alternative to a huge American Empire global war time military, let's consider this:

Let every country provide trained Special Forces to the United Nations Peace Keeping Corp.   These UN operatives would be given permission to capture or assassinate any identified terrorist or terrorist organization in any country such terrorists exist.

Totally reorganize the American CIA to eliminate its old corrupt practices of infiltrating other countries with whom we do not agree. The "School of the Americas" and other similar organizations must be eliminated.

Costs to the American Taxpayer

$1.3 trillion in Congressional War Appropriations to the Pentagon — the official budget for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

$3.7-4.4 trillion estimated total costs to American taxpayers. This includes the official Pentagon budget (above), veterans' medical and disability costs, homeland security expenses, war-related international aid and the Pentagon's projected expenditures to 2020.

$1 trillion more in interest payments through 2020 on money the U.S. borrowed for war. - from Bill Moyer reports, Alternet 3/31/12

America must lead the way to end war:

1)  By eliminating all nuclear weapons.

2)  By closing all American military bases (sites) overseas.

3)  By bringing all troops home from all countries, in particular Iraq and Afganistan.

4)  By decreasing the Pentagon/military budgets by a minimum of 50% - yet maintaining a high level of veterans support.

5)  By creating and enforcing gun control laws that will also ban hand guns and assault weapons.

6)  By eliminating military recruitment and/or training programs (called "leadership training") in all public schools.

7)  By promoting peace through negotiation abroad as well as at home.

8)  By no longer allowing parades that celebrate or glorify the military.

9)  By no longer tolerating violence: "Use a gun, Go to prison", and its corrolary,

10) By releasing from prison persons convicted of non-violent crimes to "half-way" rehabilitation homes.

11) By discouraging violent-oriented programming, such as films and software through taxation.

12) By prosecuting persons - including media pundants and politicians - who advocate violence of any kind.

CUT THE MILITARY/PENTAGON BUDGETS by no less than 50% - that means eliminate most of our troops in foreign countries -  and stop all weapons development

THESE OBJECTIVES ARE NOT UNREALISTIC.

OF COURSE, THEY CAN NOT BE ACHIEVED IN ONE FELL SWOOP.

ALWAYS "THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS" - SO WE CAN ONLY ACHIEVE THESE ENDS STEP-BY-STEP.  NEVERTHELESS, THESE ENDS ARE NECESSARY AND ACHIEVABLE BY ALL PEOPLE OF GOOD WILL.

Remember the story of "The Hundredth Monkey"?  If we spread the word, the changes for peace will eventually occur.  We only have to receive that tipping point - the number of people necessary to demand the changes.
