THE MODERN UTOPIAN

IT IS TIME TO TAKE THE ABUSE OUT OF PRISONS.

MAKE THEM CORRECTION FACILITIES, RATHER THAN PUNISHMENT CENTERS.

AS AN EXAMPLE, SEPARATING DIFFERENT CLASSES OF PRISONERS FROM ONE ANOTHER.  THOSE WITH LIFE SENTENCES WITHOUT PAROLE SHOULD NOT BE WITH     THOSE WITH SHORT TERM SENTENCES.

FIRST STEP:

Congress to pass a law that a first time offender, who is not guilty of a violent crime, will not serve prison time.  Depending on the crime,  the offender will be either placed on probation, required mental health program, or in a half-way house or a rehabilatation center.

Private prisons must have oversight by an independent counsel. Justification for holding long term prisoners must be furnished, with the oversight counsel as final arbitrator.

Prisons need a lot of reforming which this page will address as time permits. One problem is that each state has a different way of dealing with prisoners.  Still, one way or another we need a universal LAW THAT SEPARATES ALL NON-VIOLENT OFFENDERS FROM VIOLENT ONES.  That ought to be simple enough, no?

Right now there is a pressing issue that must be dealt with:

PRISONS FOR PROFIT!

Can you believe there are over 250 prisons in the USA today that are operated by private corporations for profit? They have every incentive in the world to keep people in prison  and even encourage more people to be imprisoned.

You do know the the USA has the highest number of prisoners in the world today, even exceeding places like China which has a much, much larger population.

An organization, Cuéntame, has launched a powerful animated video exposing private prison corporations. The first of a sustained documentary campaign to expose the greed and the abuse by CCA (Corrections Corporation of America), The Geo Group and Management and Training corporations - which combined currently profit more than $5 billion a year at the expense of the detention and abuse of our immigrant community.

RACISM is alive and well in America.  Do not look to the suburbs. Look to the prisons.  85%  of those incarcerated for non-violent crimes (usually drug related) are Black.  Some go in for drug abuse and come out trained to be criminals.  2 out of 3 return to prison after being released.         What do you think that does not reduce and eliminate crime in America?

More resources must be put in to PREVENTION and less into punishment.
